Shares of Spirit Airlines plunged nearly 50% Tuesday after a federal judge blocked JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ:JBLU) plan to purchase the budget airline for $3.8 billion.
The ruling is a win for the US Justice Department, which sued to block the merger on the grounds that it would increase fares by reducing competition in the discount airline market.
The deal would have created the fifth-largest airline in the US.
Meanwhile, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE:BRK.A) has acquired the remaining 20% ownership stake in truck stop and restaurant company Pilot Travel Centers from the Haslam family, according to an announcement Tuesday.
The sale comes a little over a week after the two parties settled a billion-dollar lawsuit in Delaware Chancery Court related to an accounting practice that the Haslam family alleged would artificially reduce the sale price of its interest in Pilot Travel Centers.
