ChatGPT developer OpenAI has appeared to remove a blanket ban on the use of its products for “military and warfare” related matters.
OpenAI had previously barred products from being used for such under terms in its usage policy, with the phrasing having been dropped midway through last week, as first reported by The Intercept.
This was part of a rewriting of the company’s policy page, with the specific ban on military use and use for warfare having been replaced to make the rules more readable, according to the company.
Such rules now prohibit the use OpenAI’s service “to harm yourself or others,” but do not focus explicitly on military use.
“We aimed to create a set of universal principles that are both easy to remember and apply, especially as our tools are now globally used by everyday users,” spokesperson Niko Felix said.
“A principle like ‘don’t harm others’ is broad yet easily grasped and relevant in numerous contexts.”
Felix added specific wording barring the use of OpenAI’s language models for developing weapons had been introduced.
