Walmart unveils AI tools to help shoppers

Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) is planning to implement new artificial intelligence-based tools to help shoppers, according to a keynote speech at CES in Las Vegas by CEO Doug McMillon.

Under the new plans, the big box shop has created two AI tools, one to help workers with store replenishment and one to help customers with searches, as well as an augmented reality tool.

The AI search tool is said to allow customers to find a range of products on the app by searching activities like ‘football watch party’ or ‘dinner party’.

Walmart has also been developing an AI shopping assistant, which works as a chatbot, answering questions and personalising product suggestions.

The US chain is also planning to use the popular technology to improve its replenishment operations, while also combining with existing schemes to help automate online shopping carts.

Additionally, the company announced its AR social commerce initiative 'Shop with Friends', which expands on Walmart's AI-driven virtual fashion try-on tool, allowing users to create virtual outfits with friends, share looks and seek feedback.

“It’s retail that is not only e-commerce or in-store, but a single, unified retail experience that seamlessly blends the best aspects of all channels. And for Walmart, adaptive retail is rooted in a clear focus on people,” Suresh Kumar, global chief technology officer, said in a statement.
