X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, plans to introduce a peer-to-peer payments system this year, according to a blog post Tuesday.
The post from the Elon Musk-owned network said the payment functionality will allow for “more user utility and opportunities for commerce” as part of the company’s plan to “revolutionize 2024.”
When peer-to-peer payments would launch, or how exactly they would work, was not specified.
Musk has long advocated for the creation of an “everything app” in the vein of China’s WeChat, where users can post content, message other users and manage finances all in one place.
“X is not just another app — it’s becoming the everything app, seamlessly uniting experiences into one interface, for everyone,” the company wrote.
This would be the first significant step in that direction since Musk, who also owns Tesla and SpaceX, acquired Twitter for $44 billion in 2022.
