Getty Images has teamed up with Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) for a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) offering via Getty’s iStock stock images platform.
Announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in LAS Vegas on Monday, ‘Generative AI by iStock’ is billed as “an affordable and commercially safe image generation service trained on the company’s creative library of licensed, proprietary data”.
Getty used Nvidia Picasso, the tech firm’s foundry for custom AI models, to build a vast creative library comprising photos, illustrations and videos, to provide users with a commercially safe way to generate visuals.
Users can enter simple text prompts to generate photo-quality images at up to 4K resolution.

Developers will have access to advanced editing features via the use of application-specific interfaces (APIs).
Getty’s AI integration trails that of competitor Shutterstock, which integrated OpenAI’s Dalle-2 generative AI platform as far back as October 2022.
Significant legal questions have emerged from the rapid expansion of AI-generated images.
Getty itself filed a lawsuit against AI company Stability AI for allegedly misusing millions of Getty images to train its Stable Diffusion AI platform.
“As part of its unlawful scheme, Stability AI has removed or altered Getty Images’ copyright management information, provided false copyright management information, and infringed Getty Images’ famous trademarks,” Getty alleged.
The lawsuit is awaiting trial in the US.
As for Generative AI by iStock, Getty has stated that: “We’ve created a model that compensates our world‑class content creators for the use of their work in our AI model, allowing them to continue to create more of the high‑quality pre‑shot imagery you depend on.”
