Tesla recalls 1.6M cars in China over Autosteer, door lock issues

Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is carrying out a recall of 1.6 million of its electric vehicles in China on the heels of two recalls by the automaker in the United States last month.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation said on Friday Tesla will recall imported Model S and X vehicles and domestically produced Model 3 and Y cars to avoid the misuse of the Autosteer function, which could increase the risk of a collision.

Per the regulator: “When the automatic assisted steering function is turned on, the driver may misuse the level 2 combined driving assistance function, increasing the risk of vehicle collision and posing safety risks.”

Tesla will deliver an over-the-air (OTA) software update to the impacted vehicles in phases to rectify the issue.

Further, Tesla will also upgrade the software of 7,538 imported Model S and X vehicles due to an issue with the unlock logic control which means doors can unlock during crashes.

The carmaker in December recalled 120,000 vehicles in the US over the same issue.
