If you’ve ever wanted an extra key on your keyboard, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is here for you.
Upcoming Windows PCs will come equipped with a Copilot key that will enable users to communicate via text with Microsoft’s virtual assistant, according to an announcement Thursday.
Copilot runs on artificial intelligence (AI) models built by OpenAI, the ChatGPT developer that Microsoft has invested tens of billions in. Copilot will be capable of writing emails, turning off and on certain PC features, and more, the company said.
Businesses that use Copilot for Microsoft 365 will enable their workers to get summaries of Microsoft Teams chats and assistance with writing Word documents.
Interestingly, the Copilot key is the first major edition to the Windows keyboard since the company introduced the Windows key itself in 1994. That key lets users view the Start menu.
Currently, Copilot is accessed by holding the Windows key and pressing C.
The Copilot key is expected to take the spot currently occupied by the Menu key or the right Control key, according to reports citing a Microsoft spokesperson. Some larger keyboards will have space for both the Copilot and right Control keys, though.
Shares of Microsoft rose 0.4% Thursday morning to $371.92.
