Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN, OTCQX:IVPAF), the Canadian mining giant, reached a significant milestone as the first shipment of copper concentrate from its Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) arrived at the Atlantic Ocean port of Lobito, Angola. The transportation is part of a trial tonnage under a memorandum of understanding signed between Lobito Atlantic International SARL (LAI) and Kamoa Copper in August 2023.
The Lobito Atlantic Railway Corridor, extending 1,289 kilometers from the DRC Copperbelt to Lobito, Angola, facilitated the historic shipment. This rail link is set to transform the logistics landscape, connecting the Central African Copperbelt to global markets efficiently. The trial, involving the transportation of up to 10,000 tonnes of copper concentrate, aims to collect data on greenhouse gas savings, transit times, operating costs, and other factors.
The inaugural shipment of approximately 1,110 tonnes of copper concentrate departed from Kolwezi on December 23, 2023, and arrived at Lobito on December 31. This marks a significant improvement over the current method of trucking copper concentrates across sub-Saharan Africa, reducing both transit time and energy consumption.
Robert Friedland, executive co-chair of Ivanhoe Mines, emphasized the broader impact of this achievement on the region. He stated: "Establishing a reliable, modern rail link to the port of Lobito in Angola will have transformational benefits for the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, and Zambia."
Friedland highlighted the potential for lowered costs and carbon footprints, thanks to the efficient transportation enabled by the Lobito Corridor.
The Lobito Corridor, operated by LAI, is a consortium with a 30-year concession for railway services, comprising Trafigura Pte Ltd., Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construcao Africa SA, and Vecturis SA. The consortium has committed to substantial investments in Angola and the DRC, totaling $455 million, with additional potential investments to extend the corridor into Zambia.
Friedland also noted the positive impact on Ivanhoe Mines' exploration and development activities in the Western Foreland basin, following recent high-grade discoveries. The Lobito Atlantic Railway Corridor is poised to significantly reduce logistics costs and carbon footprints, contributing to the sustainability of copper exports from the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex.
