Orsted’s 231-turbine strong wind farm, set to be built off the coast of Norfolk, will go ahead, the company has announced.
Following reports that the Danish renewable energy firm was in talks with the government over better subsidies for the site, Orsted confirmed plans for Hornsea 3 on Wednesday.
“We welcome the attractive policy regime in the UK which has helped secure this investment,” chief executive Mads Nipper said, “offshore wind is [...] extremely competitive”.
“We look forward to constructing this landmark project, which will deliver massive amounts of green energy to UK households and businesses.”
Some three million homes are anticipated to be powered by the site, which is due to be completed by late 2027.
Britain’s offshore wind market has faced blows over the past year, as developer Vattenfall cancelled one of its North Sea developments in July and a later auction for offshore wind projects failed to attract any bids.
The government has since raised the strike - guaranteed - price for developers from £44 per megawatt-hour to £73, with Orsted having previously been promised £37.35 for Hornsea 3.
