Boeing, Airbus get big aircraft orders from Lufthansa

Lufthansa announced on Tuesday that it has ordered as many as 200 short-haul aircraft from Airbus SE and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) in a total transaction valued at about $9 billion.

Lufthansa has a firm order for 40 of Boeing’s 737 MAX jets with options for 60 more, marking its first 737 order since 1995.

There is also a firm order for 40 Airbus A220-300s, all of which will be delivered between 2026 and 2032.

Orders exceeding 100 aircraft, once a rare occurrence in the industry, have become increasingly commonplace this year as delivery slots become scarce, Bloomberg reported.

Airbus and Boeing are now practically sold out for the rest of the decade on their most popular models, the media outlet noted.

Airbus has recorded gross orders for more than 2,000 aircraft this year, surpassing its 2014 record of almost 1,800, while Boeing’s order book in 2023 currently stands at about 1,200 planes.

Lufthansa added that it will use the A220s for its new City Airlines subsidiary while it will decide later on which group subsidiary will operate the Max.

Its order with Airbus includes purchasing options for 40 aircraft from the Airbus A320 family and has options for another 20 of the smaller A220.

Shares of Boeing rose 1.5% to $264.19 in early-afternoon trading on Tuesday and have gained 35% year to date.
