OpenAI partners with Politico owner to bring real-time news content to ChatGPT

ChatGPT is gaining access to a trove of current information thanks to a deal reached between OpenAI and German media company Axel Springer, the companies announced Wednesday.

Axel Springer, which owns Politico, Business Insider and the German outlets Bild and Welt, will provide ChatGPT with content that it can use to train its large language models and provide real-time news summaries.

For OpenAI, the move is intended to “help provide people with new ways to access quality, real-time news content through our AI tools,” OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap announced Wednesday.

Importantly, ChatGPT’s answers will also include source attribution for the first time.

The partnership "explicitly values the publisher's role in contributing to OpenAI's products,” according to the joint statement and creates “financial opportunities that support a sustainable future for journalism.”

The move also sets a precedent for publishers looking to get paid for sharing their content with OpenAI and other LLM companies, although the financial terms of the deal were not revealed.
