Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) now requires law enforcement to obtain an order from a judge to access users’ push notification data, according to reports.
Apple didn’t announce the policy change but it is currently listed among the company’s publicly available law enforcement guidelines.
The decision aligns the two biggest smartphone operating system designers, Apple and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)'s Google, in requiring a higher standard from law enforcement.
Last week, push notifications were the subject of a letter to the Department of Justice from Oregon Senator Ron Wyden that said foreign governments were requesting data from Apple and Google.
Both companies said they’ve received such requests, which concern the notifications that apps send to alert users of incoming messages, news and other updates.
Shares of Apple rose 0.8% Tuesday, while Alphabet stock declined 0.8%.
