Faron Pharmaceuticals Limited (AIM:FARN, OTC:FPHAF) unveiled promising results from its BEXMAB trial at a leading medical conference, showcasing a new drug's effectiveness in treating aggressive blood cancers, and offering hope for advanced treatment options.
Researchers focused on a new drug, bexmarilimab, designed to treat aggressive forms of blood cancer, specifically Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS). MDS is a group of disorders caused by poorly formed or dysfunctional blood cells, often leading to severe health complications.
Remarkably, every patient in the two key groups of the study responded positively to the treatment. These groups included patients with high-risk MDS, a more severe form of the disease, and those for whom previous standard treatments had failed.
Furthermore, most of these patients didn't just show minor improvements; they experienced significant and lasting recovery. In medical terms, they achieved what's known as Complete Remission or marrow Complete Remission. This means that signs of cancer were nearly or completely undetectable in their bone marrow, a key indicator of the disease's presence.
One patient, showing remarkable improvement, was even able to proceed to stem cell transplantation. This is a procedure often used in severe cases of blood cancers, where the patient's diseased bone marrow is replaced with healthy marrow.
"The BEXMAB results continue to improve over time showing remarkable overall response rate in both higher-risk frontline as well as hypomethylating agent (HMA)-failed myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients," said Faron CEO Dr Markku Jalkanen.
"The combination is well-tolerated and generates strong and durable leukemic blast eradication and immune responses. This solidifies bexmarilimab's unique and leading mechanism of action in the field of myeloid cell re-programming. With this compelling evidence, we are well positioned to advance to the phase II part of the BEXMAB study."
The BEXMAB study, conducted across Finland and the US, uses an approach that 're-programmes' the body's immune cells to fight cancer more effectively.
