1. FTSE 100 Live: Stocks end up, pound down after strong US jobs report
The FTSE 100 ended the week higher after US non-farm payrolls for November came in better than expected and the dollar gained ground against the pound. In the US, markets opened modestly lower following the strong jobs report although economists remain of the view that interest rates will be cut in the first half of 2024.
2. Anglo American slapped down 14% after revealing more disciplined outlook
Expected capital expenditure will be cut by US$1.8 billion (£1.44bn) out to 2025 as part of the shift in its investment approach to concentrate on what boss Duncan Wanblad called "improving our resilience", with lowering unit costs also in focus.
3. Microsoft-OpenAI partnership under scrutiny from UK regulator
An invitation for comment asks for input from Microsoft, OpenAI and interested third parties on the two firms’ close partnership to determine the potential impact on competition in the UK artificial intelligence sector.
4. Marex Group latest London defector, files for New York IPO
Marex is the latest in a long line of British businesses to give the Square Mile the cold shoulder in 2023, with the most high profile being microchip giant Arm Holdings’ $54 billion snubbing in August.
