JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon is no crypto bull, that's for sure.
Dimon blasted cryptocurrencies during a Senate Banking Committee hearing Wednesday, stating that if he had governmental authority, he would "close it down."
Responding to Senator Elizabeth Warren's claims of crypto financing North Korea's missile program and supporting Hamas, Dimon associated digital assets with "criminals" and "drug traffickers."
The CEOs of major banks agreed with Warren's suggestion of subjecting crypto firms to Anti-Money Laundering rules. Crypto advocates argue that claims linking crypto to illicit finance demonstrate a lack of understanding of blockchain technology and acknowledge its potential as a threat to the traditional financial system.
Warren has been a vocal opponent of crypto, emphasizing its alleged role in terrorism financing.
Dimon’s comments came the same day that Bitcoin surged 5% against the US dollar, reaching a 20-month high of $44,500.
This marks a year-to-date gain of over 165%, driven by a confluence of macroeconomic and technical factors. The anticipation of approval for numerous spot-Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) has generated significant excitement, fostering the idea of mainstream adoption of Bitcoin as an asset class in the US.
Additionally, factors such as peak interest rates, decreasing inflation, and a weakening US dollar have heightened the risk-on sentiment among investors.
Meanwhile, global cryptocurrency market capitalization exceeded $1.6 trillion overnight, with Bitcoin dominance approaching 55%.
