Britain is inadequately prepared for any adverse weather events that might stem from climate change, a National Audit Office (NAO) report has suggested.
Readiness for the four extreme weather risks - droughts, surface water flooding, storms and high temperatures – need to be bolstered and better arrangements put in place to mitigate the risk, said the report.
"The challenge for the government now is how it places sufficient emphasis on prevention and preparedness, making informed decisions about prioritisation to ensure efficient and effective investment in the long-term."
A new cross-department strategy needs to be developed by 2025 and implemented by 2028, said the NAO, adding that spending on extreme weather is not currently tracked or evaluated.
