X.ai, Elon Musk's latest venture into artificial intelligence, has disclosed that it has successfully secured a substantial funding amount of at least $134.7 million.
The fundraising, as disclosed in an SEC filing, marks a significant step towards its ambitious $1 billion target.
Musk, the visionary entrepreneur known for his role in founding companies like Tesla and SpaceX, revealed his foray into the artificial intelligence sector earlier this year with the establishment of X.ai. The move was positioned as a response to Musk's departure from OpenAI, a venture he co-founded in 2015, where he served on the board until 2018.
Details about the financing of X.ai had been relatively scarce until the recent SEC filing. Musk hinted at the financial structure in a brief post on November 19, indicating that current shareholders in X (formerly Twitter) would be entitled to 25% of X.ai.
The filing further adds to the intrigue by stating, "[t]he issuer has entered into a binding and enforceable agreement for the purchase and sale of the Total Remaining to be Sold listed above." This suggests that X.ai may have not only met but potentially exceeded its $1 billion fundraising target.
Founded by Musk in March 2023, X.ai has established its headquarters in the tech hub of the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Musk strategically appointed Igor Babuschkin, a former member of Google's DeepMind unit, as the Chief Engineer to spearhead the venture's technological endeavors.
The official announcement of X.ai was made by Musk on July 12, 2023, a date linked to Douglas Adams' iconic novel, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy” in which a supercomputer identifies 42 as the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.
X.ai’s broader goal "to understand the universe."
One of its immediate objectives is the development of an AI capable of advanced mathematical reasoning, distinguishing itself from existing models.
