Eli Lilly and Co (NYSE:LLY) announced that its weight loss drug Zepbound is now available at pharmacies in the US, sending its shares slightly higher Tuesday.
The treatment is expected to cost $25 per month for customers whose insurance covers the drug and $550 per month for customers whose insurance does not.
Zepbound joins the ranks of Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and others in a crowded weight loss drug market that is expected by analysts to reach $100 billion by 2030.
Analysts estimate Zepbound specifically to generate $2 billion in sales next year. For reference, Novo Nordisk's (NYSE:NVO) Wegovy is expected by Barclays to generate $7.3 billion in sales.
Zepbound, like Wegovy, is a GLP-1 agonist originally developed as a treatment for Type-2 diabetes. It also uses the same active ingredient as Mounjaro, Eli Lilly’s diabetes drug.
Zepbound was approved by the FDA in November.
Eli Lilly shares climbed 0.4% Tuesday afternoon and are up roughly 60% in 2023.
