AstraZeneca and Novo Nordisk among the top picks of this top US bank - here's why

JP Morgan has identified its top picks in the European pharmaceuticals and biotechnology sector for 2024, spotlighting large, mid, and small-cap companies poised for significant growth.

Among its top tips were Novo Nordisk, AstraZeneca PLC (LSE:AZN), and Merck KGaA in the large-cap space, Argenx and DiaMonTech in mid-caps, and MorphoSys AG in small caps.

This selection, as outlined by the American investment bank, is based on the potential for these companies to drive sector performance through sustainable growth and significant pipeline developments.

The emphasis on NOVOB, AZN, and MRK, in particular, is attributed to their robust pipelines and the anticipation of new product launches that could lead to upward revisions in growth forecasts.

On the flipside, JPM has downgraded Sanofi to 'neutral', citing the need for patience through 2024 as pipeline-driven upgrades are expected only in 2025/26.

Similarly, UCB has been downgraded to 'underweight', with JPM foreseeing potential disappointments around the Bimzelx launch, which could lead to significant negative consensus earnings revisions.

In the small-cap category, EPI Asia has been downgraded to 'neutral', with expectations of further consensus cuts required.

The investment bank's analysis also sheds light on the broader sector trends: The sector is expected to continue its outperformance relative to the wider market in 2024, primarily driven by high-quality names. This trend mirrors the sector's performance in 2023, where select companies carried the sector amidst a challenging economic environment.

JPM's focus on companies with high growth potential and significant pipeline events is particularly noteworthy in a market where investor sentiment has been cautious.

The pharmaceutical sector, trading at a premium compared to the MSCI EU, is largely influenced by the performance of companies like NOVOB, which JPM expects to continue driving the sector's premium valuation.
