Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) has bought a trio of SpaceX Falcon 9 launches to support its Project Kuiper mega-constellation, the company announced Friday.
The Falcon 9 missions are expected to launch starting in mid-2025. Project Kuiper involves a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit, and Amazon has been required by the Federal Communications Commission to launch at least half of that total by 2026.
The purchase from SpaceX is notable because Amazon was sued about two months ago for refusing to consider the Elon Musk-led company in its first round of contracts.
All told, Amazon has purchased as many as 83 launches from companies including Arianespace, Blue Origin and United Launch Alliance.
Shares of Amazon closed 0.6% higher Friday at $147.03.
