Sam Altman officially returns to OpenAI after five days of madness at ChatGPT developer

Sam Altman has officially resumed his role as CEO of OpenAI, following five days of madness at the developer of ChatGPT.

The upheaval has also led to the replacement of the previous board members.

The first new appointees are Bret Taylor, former co-CEO of Salesforce and board member at Shopify, and Larry Summers, former Treasury Secretary and Harvard University President. Adam D’Angelo, CEO of Quora, remains from the previous board.

Gone from the board are Georgetown University’s Helen Toner, Tasha McCauley, a scientist at Rand Corporation, and OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever.

The board's restructuring comes amid OpenAI's transition towards a more conventional Silicon Valley startup model while maintaining its status as a capped-profit entity under a nonprofit. This change aims to enhance OpenAI's governance and strategic direction in the rapidly evolving AI industry.

Negotiations are reportedly underway to install representation from Microsoft and other major investors.
