Lush tries hairdressing with new Brighton salon

Lush, the cosmetics retailer, is moving into the hairdressing industry through the opening of a hair salon next month.

Hair Lab will open in Brighton on 2 December and aims to transfer the sustainability-driven ethos of Lush across into the hair and beauty sector.

Haircuts and other services will be priced between £55 and £80.

Mark Constantine, the company's co-founder and chief executive, seems to have found a gap in the market, offering chemical-free natural henna dyes, something which he argued is “quite extraordinary for a hair salon”.

As conventional practices often employ a blend of ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, and p-phenylenediamine in hair dyes, the move juxtaposes Lush’s commitment to working with natural products.

Lush also plans to recycle 100% of the waste from the salon, including providing hair cuttings for a re-use strategy.

“With Brighton being the greenest town, politically, in Britain, we hope people there will appreciate it,” Constantine said.

Customers at the salon will receive an option of using hard or soft water treatments, despite Brighton and Eastbourne having some of the hardest water in Britain.
