Cruise co-founder exits with boss after robotaxi flop

Cruise vehicles were shunned from California's roads in October after being approved just months earlier

Cruise co-founder and chief product officer Daniel Kan has announced his resignation from the company just a day after chief executive Kyle Vogt departed.

Both resignations come as General Motors Company (NYSE:GM)-owned Cruise reels from the failed rollout of its automated taxi service in San Francisco.

However, neither appears to have addressed the issues faced by the company in their parting statements.

Rather, Kan pointed to the peak of Cruise’s operations in an internal Slack message, when it was serving 10,000 rides a week, commenting: “I know Cruise will achieve that again soon."

Vogt had written that the firm’s driverless technology proved there was “something far better around the corner”, adding the service had provided a “small taste of the future”.

A score of incidents involving Cruise vehicles since the company was given the green light to operate commercially in California in August has dampened the success of the rollout of its driverless taxi service.

These include run-ins with emergency vehicles and one case where a pedestrian was hit and dragged by a Cruise vehicle after being struck by a non-Cruise vehicle, placing the company’s technology under scrutiny.

Californian authorities dubbed the company’s vehicles as “not safe for the public's operation" as a result, with Cruise’s permit to operate on the state’s roads being removed.

Cruise then opted last week to pause all on-road vehicle operations in the US, as it bids to “rebuild public trust” and carry out safety reviews.
