OpenAI's board approaches Anthropic with merger offer; pitches CEO role to Dario Amodei

In a significant development, OpenAI's board of directors approached Dario Amodei, co-founder and chief executive officer of Anthropic, proposing a potential merger between the two companies and an offer to take up the role of CEO, according to The Information.

Amodei quickly declined the offer primarily due to his existing responsibilities at Anthropic.

However, the status of the merger proposal remains unclear, with no confirmation if it has progressed into serious discussions.

This approach followed the board's decision to dismiss Sam Altman as CEO of OpenAI, who later joined MIcrosoft along with Greg Brockman and a few other colleagues.

Anthropic, merely two years old, has been a fierce competitor to OpenAI, particularly with its chatbot product, Claude, which stands as a direct rival to OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Both entities are deeply involved in a battle to attract top talent in research and to expand their customer base.

This move by OpenAI's board reflects the dynamic and increasingly competitive nature of the AI industry, highlighting the strategic shifts companies are considering to maintain or enhance their positions in the market.
