Biden Administration investing $3.5B to boost domestic battery manufacturing

The Biden Administration announced that up to US$3.5 billion is being invested to boost the domestic production of advanced batteries and battery materials.

The funding, the second phase of a total US$6 billion package, comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and will be administered by the Department of Energy’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC).

It will be used to create new, retrofitted and expanded domestic facilities for battery-grade processed critical materials, battery precursor materials, battery components, and cell and pack manufacturing.

The MESC is also calling for projects that will increase the separation of battery-grade critical materials, expand production facilities for cathode and anode materials production, and expand battery component manufacturing facilities.

Enterprises who wish to apply for funding need to submit a concept paper by January 9, 2024, and full applications are due by March 19, 2024.

“Positioning the United States front and center to meet the growing demand for advanced batteries is how we boost our global competitiveness, maintain and create good-paying jobs, and strengthen our clean energy economy,” U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said.

“President Biden’s historic investments are giving the boost needed to build a robust domestic battery supply chain that is Made-in-America.”
