A growing proportion of American adults are regularly getting news on TikTok Global in contrast to other social media sites where news consumption has remained flat or has declined, a survey by Pew Research has shown.
The survey showed that the share of TikTok users who regularly get news from the short-form video content platform has almost doubled from 22% in 2020 to 43% in 2023.
TikTok users are now just as likely to get news from TikTok as they are from Facebook, which has seen a decline in users accessing news from 54% to 43% over the same three-year period.
However, TikTok users remain less likely to get news on the platform than users of X, formerly known as Twitter, where 53% of the social media’s users regularly get news. This is down from 59% in 2020.
The study also showed that across all age groups, 14% of U.S. adults say they regularly access news on TikTok. This has more than quadrupled from 3% in 2020.
Almost one in three (32%) of Americans aged 18 to 29 say they regularly get news from TikTok.
This compares to 15% of those aged 30 to 49, 7% of those aged 50 to 64, and 3% of those 65 and older.
