Vodafone Group PLC (LSE:VOD) is currently navigating through a phase of strategic growth and operational adjustments. A recent research note from Barclays Capital sheds light on the company's financial health and prospects, offering valuable insights for investors and market watchers.
The core of Vodafone's strategy, as outlined by Barclays, revolves around a rebound in growth, particularly in service revenues and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) by the financial year 2025 (FY25e).
This ambitious plan hinges on broad-based operational improvements across the company's diverse portfolio. However, Barclays cautions that this transformation might be more time-consuming than anticipated.
Barclays has adjusted its estimates for Vodafone, reducing price target from 95p to 90p for Vodafone's UK stock and from ZAR130 to ZAR125 for Vodacom, its African subsidiary. This revision reflects a tempered outlook, considering the company's recent performance and future challenges.
Vodafone's service revenue growth showed improvement in the quarter, aided by price hikes across European markets and steady growth in South Africa.
Despite these positive signs, Barclays notes that free cash flow (FCF) and EBITDA in key markets such as Italy, the UK and Spain were below expectations. The central function provided some offset, but the overall picture remains mixed.
Management's reiteration of FY24 guidance, with adjusted EBITDA (lease payments adjusted) expected to be "broadly flat" at around €13.3 billion and adjusted FCF to be "around" €3.3 billion, offers a semblance of stability.
However, Barclays points out the underlying operational uncertainties, particularly in Germany and Italy, which could impact this trajectory.
The potential for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in Italy was a topic of interest but lacked elaboration during the management call.
Barclays also anticipates a likely rebasing of the dividend next year, post the Spain disposal, projecting a 6c payout from FY25e.
