Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is to double the number of components it imports from India, the country’s trade minister Piyush Goyal claimed on Tuesday.
"Proud to see the growing importance of Auto component suppliers from India in the Tesla EV supply chain,” he posted on social media platform X.
Tesla is set to source between US$1.7 billion and US$1.9 billion from India this year, roughly double the amount a year ago.
Goyal was speaking after a visit to the Tesla manufacturing plant at Fremont in California, though he did not meet chief executive Elon Musk on his visit.
According to Reuters, Tesla plans to open an Indian factory manufacturing a US$24,000 car, source more components and establish charging infrastructure across the country.
Earlier this year, reports suggested the EV maker is also considering building a battery storage facility in India.
