BT Pension Scheme deficit tumbles 54%, payments remain the same

Payments into the BT Pension Scheme scheme will remain the same despite a sharp drop in the fund's deficit, it emerged on Tuesday.

The shortfall has dropped to £3.7 billion from £7.98 billion in 2020. But BT Group PLC (LSE:BT.A) has committed to making annual contributions of £600 million until 2030, along with a final payment of £490 million due by April 2030.

"The agreement allows us to deliver on our strategic initiatives such as investing in our networks and transforming our business," said Simon Lowth, BT's chief financial officer.

"And it is consistent with our funding priorities of investing in value-enhancing opportunities, supporting our pension funds, paying progressive dividends and maintaining a strong balance sheet."

The update was part of BT's triennial review of its pension commitments.

The shares opened 1% lower at 121.75p.
