Twilio shares gain on 3Q earnings surprise; upbeat outlook

Twilio Inc (NYSE:TWLO) has reported third-quarter earnings and revenue that beat expectations as it grew the number of active customers using its services.

The San Francisco-based customer engagement platform also guided for 4Q earnings well above analysts’ estimates, sending its shares higher in Thursday pre-market trading.

For the September 30, 2023 quarter, Twilio posted revenue of $1.03 billion, up 5% from a year earlier and ahead of the $989 million expected by Wall Street analysts.

Its loss from operations narrowed by 76% to $109 million, while adjusted income from operations improved to $136 million from a $35.1 million loss for 3Q 2022.

Adjusted earnings per share jumped to $0.58 from a $0.27 loss a year earlier, ahead of the $0.35 expected by the Street.

The company's active customer accounts in 3Q rose to 306,000 from 280,000 a year earlier.

“Twilio had a strong third quarter, delivering another record quarter of non-GAAP income from operations and free cash flow,” commented the company’s co-founder and CEO Jeff Lawson.

“We are building a foundation for profitable growth that enables us to invest in our CustomerAI vision to deliver even more compelling outcomes for our customers and our shareholders in the long term.”

The company has guided for full-year revenue of $1.03 billion to $1.04 billion and adjusted EPS of $0.53 to $0.57.

Ahead of the opening bell, its shares were up 5.2% at $58.72.
