Lithium Universe finalises location study for Québec battery-grade lithium carbonate refinery

Lithium Universe Ltd (ASX:LU7) has finalised its site selection study, pinpointing the location for a new refinery with a projected annual output of 16,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate. This refinery is a key component of the company's Québec Lithium Processing Hub initiative.

The Bécancour Industrial Park is the most favoured site and sits between Québec City and Montreal. LU7 has started discussions with Bécancour management.

Hatch Ltd has been tasked with executing an extensive engineering study to design LU7's versatile lithium processing facility in Canada.

Lithium Universe is strategically positioning itself as a leader in lithium project development, emphasising rapid and efficient progress from resource acquisition to constructing a spodumene-producing mine in Québec.

With strategic access to significant lithium prospects within premier mining regions in Canada and Australia, the company is strengthening its foundation for growth in the global lithium market.

Focus on suitable site

“The comprehensive location study carried out by Hatch for our battery-grade lithium carbonate refinery has guided our decision-making process, leading us to focus on a suitable location,” Lithium Universe chairman Iggy Tan said.

“Establishing a sophisticated chemical refinery in the James Bay region is not viable. However, setting up a concentrator near an ore body is feasible.

"We can transport the spodumene concentrate to a regional facility, such as the Bécancour Industrial Park, where it can be converted into battery-grade lithium carbonate.

"Our team has initiated talks with the park authorities to explore potential site options".

Potential locations and selection criteria

LU7 has completed a thorough location study. This investigation involved engaging with more than 20 municipalities and was informed by the latest site location benchmarks from 2021 and 2023.

The final assessment stage focused on four prospective sites within the Québec region, underscoring the company's meticulous approach to selecting a location that aligns with its strategic objectives for the Québec Lithium Processing Hub.

The four sites were:

  1. The area around the Mirage Outfitter, on Trans Taiga Highway in James Bay.
  2. Areas outside Montreal, including Bécancour, Beauharnois, Sorel-Tracy and Deschambault.
  3. Established mining communities such as Rouyn-Noranda and Amos.
  4. Industrial area in Saguenay/Alma.

The selection criteria for the site were based on the following key factors:

  1. Availability of flat land.
  2. Logistics capabilities, including access to rail, road and port facilities.
  3. Labour availability for construction, operation and maintenance.
  4. Consideration of First Nations' interests.
  5. Availability of essential services such as natural gas, high-voltage electricity, and water.
  6. Constructability, considering factors like wetlands and soil capacity.
  7. Cost considerations for construction, operation, and maintenance.
