Just days removed from its first developer day conference, OpenAI’s ChatGPT shut down briefly Wednesday morning.
Before 9 am ET, ChatGPT as well as the Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)-backed company's API services, which are used by more than two million developers, started running error messages that the chatbot was “at capacity.”
A status page called the issue a “major outage.”
“Between 5:42AM - 7:16AM PT we saw errors impacting all services. We identified the problem and implemented a fix. We are now seeing normal responses from our services,” the status page said.
Notably, OpenAI rival Anthropic also ran into issues with its Claude 2 chatbot on Wednesday morning.
The issues come a day after OpenAI unveiled GPT-4 Turbo, which the company is hailing as its most powerful artificial intelligence model to date, at its first annual developer day event on Monday.
The ability to train a custom chatbot will now be available to more than just enterprise and business clients, OpenAI said.
“Anyone can easily build their own GPT—no coding is required,” the company said in a statement. “You can make them for yourself, just for your company’s internal use, or for everyone. Creating one is as easy as starting a conversation, giving it instructions and extra knowledge, and picking what it can do, like searching the web, making images or analyzing data.”
This expansion may prove to be the death knell for a class of startup companies known as “wrappers,” which built apps that deliver features on top of ChatGPT that users can now more easily do themselves.
