Ceres Power Holdings PLC (LSE:CWR, OTC:CPWHF) said its first-of-a-kind solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) demonstrator is producing hydrogen and will be ready in coming weeks to be sent to Shell’s R&D centre in India.
The 1MW-scale SOEC demonstrator, which has been assembled at a site in Germany operated by partner AVL, is reported to be producing hydrogen at less than 40 kWh per kilogram.
With the system requiring less than 40 kilowatt-hours of electrical energy to produce one kilogram of hydrogen, this is 25% more efficient than incumbent technologies, Ceres said.
The demonstrator is in the final stages of commissioning and is on track to reach factory acceptance testing in the coming weeks, it added, when it will be shipped to the Shell Technology Centre in Bangalore for more work testing the performance, cost and operational functionality of the SOEC technology.

Ceres noted that its next-generation stack technology has also been released this year with improvements in performance and cost that is being tested in feasibility studies underway with partners that are focused on designing 100MW-plus projects to deliver green hydrogen at scale.
