Why Birkenstock shares are fairly valued

Following Birkenstock's entry into the US stock market less than a month ago, UBS has started its coverage with a neutral stance, suggesting only a modest rise from the current $41.55 to a target price of $44.

The German sandal brand, known for its durable footwear, listed at $46 but has seen a slight decline since its lukewarm debut in October.

The investment bank's valuation reflects a balance between Birkenstock's strong brand reputation and the hurdles it faces in maintaining the high growth rates of previous years.

The stock's current valuation is 16 times its projected earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization for 2024. This rate positions Birkenstock between faster-growing athletic brands and other footwear peers.

UBS's target is based on a slightly higher future earnings multiple, aligning with the industry average for similar growth and profit margins.

Birkenstock has seen impressive sales growth, and UBS predicts this will continue, driven by expansion into new footwear categories and increased market penetration globally.

The company's signature product, a footbed designed to mimic the feeling of walking barefoot, is a significant draw for customers. Birkenstock's commitment to quality is evident in its predominantly German-made products. Plans are underway to double production capacity in the next three years, which could help fuel further growth.

Yet, UBS cautions investors about potential risks: slower growth in the number of units sold, reduced brand popularity, and possible increases in marketing costs as the company expands. Birkenstock aims for a 10-12% growth in unit sales shortly, supported by its manufacturing expansion.
