Virgin Atlantic taxiing toward 100% sustainable transatlantic flight

Regulatory green light marks another step towards 2050 net-zero target

Virgin Atlantic is one step closer to crossing the pond using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) after the UK Civil Aviation Authority gave the green light to the pioneering transatlantic flight, which is set to take to the skies on November 28.

This flight will mark a significant milestone as it will be powered entirely by SAF, flying from London Heathrow to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Virgin Atlantic’s pending flight follows rigorous testing, including extensive ground trials of the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines used in Virgin's Boeing 787 aircraft.

Regulators in Canada, Ireland, and the US still need to grant approval before takeoff.

Despite SAF making up only a mere 0.5% of aviation fuel used in 2021, the industry is ambitiously aiming to increase this to 10% by 2030.

This target is part of a broader commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, a goal that hinges on SAF constituting 65% of the aviation fuel mix.

Sustainable aviation fuel is a cleaner-burning fuel made from sustainable resources such as waste oils, fats, greases, and even agricultural residues.

Unlike traditional aviation fuel, which is derived from fossil fuels, SAF can reduce carbon emissions significantly over its lifecycle.

The production of SAF, however, is currently more expensive due to the nascent technology and limited production facilities, which makes it less economically competitive compared to conventional jet fuel.

The high cost of SAF is attributed to several factors, including the complexity of the production process, the current scarcity of raw materials, and the substantial investment required for the development of infrastructure and technology to produce it at scale.

Virgin Atlantic's upcoming flight will act as a demonstration of technological advancement but also a call to action for the industry, policymakers, and fuel producers to collaborate and invest in the rapid scale-up of SAF production.
