King Charles III highlighted the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in his opening address to the UK’s first Safety Summit at Bletchley Park, comparing it to historical milestones such as the harnessing of electricity, the splitting of the atom and the discovery of fire.
The King described AI as "one of the greatest technological leaps in the history of human endeavour" but emphasised the need to address its associated risks, much like the global effort to combat climate change.
Charles stressed the importance of collective action, stating that world leaders must address the risks of AI with a sense of urgency, unity, and collective strength, similar to the approach taken to tackle climate change.
"We are witnessing one of the greatest technological leaps in the history of human endeavour," he said and urged collaboration to ensure the safety and security of this rapidly evolving technology.
In a typically dramatic post, Elon Musk, Tesla chief executive and 'X'/Twitter owner, had already warned that AI potentially might threaten the existence of the human race if left to run unchecked.
Musk expressed the need to establish a framework for oversight, suggesting the appointment of a third-party referee to observe leading AI companies. He emphasised the importance of cautious regulation that does not hinder the positive aspects of AI development.

Michelle Donelan, Britain's Technology Secretary, also announced a groundbreaking agreement known as the 'Bletchley Declaration on AI Safety', signed by representatives from 27 countries and the EU, including China.
This agreement, which she hailed as a "landmark achievement", sets the foundation for a global conversation on AI safety.
Donelan emphasised the need to address the risks associated with AI to unlock its extraordinary opportunities.
His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama from the UAE, the world's first minister for AI, is also attending the summit.
Al Olama stressed the importance of transparency and ethics in AI development, highlighting the need for swift government action to ensure progress, safety and inclusivity.
Ian Hogarth, chairman of the UK Frontier AI Taskforce, expressed concerns about the potentially catastrophic consequences of uncontrolled AI advances, emphasising the current lack of understanding surrounding AI and its pivotal role in the history of technology.
