Google owner Alphabet ploughs $2bn into AI start-up Anthropic

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), Google's parent company, has committed to a $2 billion investment in Anthropic, the artificial intelligence (AI) start-up.

The San Francisco-based company, co-founded by Dario Amodei, formerly of ChatGPT investor OpenAI, has already achieved a valuation surpassing $5 billion.

Amodei controversially stated this week that there's a '10% to 25%' likelihood that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity.

This significant investment comes on the heels of Amazon's reported $4 billion infusion into Anthropic last month, highlighting the race among tech giants to dominate the AI sector.

Anthropic is the developer of Claude 2, said to have better guard rails than competing large language models, which means in some circles it is being touted as a "ChatGPT killer."

Premarket, Alphabet stock was up 1% at $123.41.
