Sony Group Corps’s latest instalment to its Spider-Man franchise has become the fastest-ever selling PlayStation-produced game, the company announced on Wednesday.
In a blog post, Sony said over 2.5 million copies of ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ had been sold within the first 24 hours of its release.
Produced by Sony-owned Insomniac Games, the latest instalment is the third in its series, following two releases in 2018 and 2020 respectively.
“With an epic storyline, two playable superheroes, a visually-stunning Marvel’s New York, and so much more, this is a game you can get lost in for hours,” Sony marketing vice president Eric Lempel commented.
“On behalf of Sony, I want to say thank you to the fans - we truly hope you are enjoying your time playing.”
Though Spider-Man plays a key part in the Marvel film franchise, which is owned by The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), the rights to the web-wielding character are actually held by Sony.
As a result, the latest Spider-Man only be played on PlayStation consoles, which themselves are produced by Sony, and not rival devices such as Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Xbox.
Though the game is available to go and purchase in physical stores, such as GameStop Corp (NYSE:GME), experts have tipped that a large number of the sales will likely have been online so far.
"The majority of games sold these days are digitally downloaded," GamesIndustry.biz head Christopher Dring said. "The market was heading in this direction before the pandemic hit.”
