Nvidia has been told to halt sales of certain types of semiconductors to China as the US government brought forward the start of a proposed ban.
Originally, the ban was due to come into force in the middle of November, but Nvidia said it had been ordered to stop shipments “effective immediately”.
A new round of trade talks starts next month between when Chinese President Xi Jinping visits the US.
Nvidia designed the five chips concerned specifically to get around a previous set of US restrictions but tensions between the two countries have ratcheted up due to Taiwan and China’s backing of Russia in Ukraine.
Western governments have also grown increasingly concerned about China’s adoption of cutting-edge technology.
Dutch company ASML is also prohibited from selling its latest products to China after the US put pressure on the government of the Netherlands.
