Eli Lilly and Co (NYSE:LLY) is planning a trial of its diabetes drug Mounjaro in patients with obesity as young as six years old according to a Bloomberg report Friday citing a person familiar with the matter.
The company is already carrying out a Phase 3 trial of the drug in children as young as 10 years old and teenagers with type 2 diabetes.
Its rival Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO) has also been carrying out a Phase 3 trial involving children aged from six to 18 years old who are obese or overweight for its weight-loss drug Semaglutide, also known as Ozempic.
There has been an increase in demand for both Mounjaro and Semaglutide this year for the treatment of diabetes and obesity.
Eli Lilly reported almost $1 billion in sales from Mounjaro in the second quarter and has achieved sales of $1.5 billion in sales of the drug in the year to date.
The company’s shares traded lower in the early afternoon on Friday, down 0.8% at $586.29.
