Elon Musk says X will launch new paid premium tiers

Elon Musk has confirmed that X (the platform formerly known as Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR)) will launch two new premium tiers.

One tier will be cheaper than the currently available $8 per month subscription plan but won’t remove ads. The other will be pricer and ad-free, while the current plan sits somewhere in the middle by claiming to deliver “half ads” to subscribers.

Two new tiers of X Premium subscriptions launching soon.

One is lower cost with all features, but no reduction in ads, and the other is more expensive, but has no ads.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 20, 2023

Musk’s announcement confirms previous reports of references in X’s codes about three distinct premium tiers.

While Musk didn’t mention specific prices, X began testing a $1 per year plan for users in New Zealand and the Philippines that enables only basic functions like posting, liking and reposting.

Sneaking the payment in under the guise of helping “combat bots and spammers on X”, the subscription, called 'Not A Bot', requires new users to verify their identities with a phone number before paying the annual fee or opting for a premium account.
