Amazon is getting tougher with working-from-home refuseniks and has told managers they can fire staff who refuse to come back to the workplace three days a week.
According to internal memos seen by Business Insider, supervisors have been issued guidelines that explain how to dismiss staff who won’t return.
The e-commerce group has a hugely successful team cloud business that employs thousands of specialist software engineers who work from home, said the report.
Amazon’s new stance ratchets up an ongoing battle with these staff over homeworking that recently saw 30,000 employees sign a petition rejecting a mandatory three days a week in the office.
According to the report, staff who do not turn up will face a “conversation” with their manager, who has been told to “1) reinforce that return to office 3+ days a week is a requirement of their job, and 2) explain that continued non-compliance without a legitimate reason may lead to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of your employment.”
Other tech companies such as Apple, Meta and Google have implemented return-to-office programmes with varying degrees of success.
