Ondine Biomedical Inc (AIM:OBI) has unveiled groundbreaking research showing that its Steriwave photodisinfection technology can eliminate more than 99.9% of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The study comes as a significant development in the fight against antimicrobial resistance, a growing public health crisis responsible for 33,000 deaths annually in Europe alone.
Steriwave's photodisinfection uses light and a photosensitizer to kill a wide range of microbes, including bacteria and fungi, without contributing to antibiotic resistance. The findings suggest that Steriwave could become a crucial tool in global strategies to combat drug-resistant infections.
"We continue to demonstrate, both clinically in hospitals across Canada and in the lab, that photodisinfection can provide a real alternative to topical antimicrobials which are no longer effective against an increasing number of pathogens," said Ondine chief executive Carolyn Cross.
"The evidence continues to show that photodisinfection destroys all types of pathogens including viruses, bacteria and fungi even those in biofilm, and we believe this technology can save millions of lives.
"The results of this study are particularly welcome as we prepare for our US Phase 3 trial in partnership with HCA Healthcare who are providing invaluable guidance and support."
