Qualcomm partners with Google to develop RISC-V chip for wearable devices

Shares of QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) moved higher after the technology company announced it is expanding its collaboration with Google to develop chips based on RISC-V technology for wearable devices like smartwatches.

RISC-V is an open-source technology used to develop custom processes from a range of end applications.

Qualcomm said that through the partnership with Google, it is developing a RISC-V Snapdragon Wear platform to power Wear OS solutions.

It will enable more products within the Wear OS ecosystem to leverage custom computer processing units that are low power and high performance, the company said.

Timing of the commercial product launch of the RISC-V wearable-based solution will be disclosed at a later date, it added.

“Our Snapdragon Wear platform innovations will help the Wear OS ecosystem rapidly evolve and streamline new device launches globally,” Dino Bekis, vice president and general manager of Wearables and Mixed Signal Solutions at Qualcomm said in a statement.

Bjorn Kilburn, general manager of Wear OS by Google, added: “Qualcomm Technologies have been a pillar of the Wear OS ecosystem, providing high performance, low power systems for many of our OEM partners. We are excited to extend our work with Qualcomm Technologies and bring a RISC-V wearable solution to market.”

Qualcomm shares were up 1.2% at US$111.86 on Tuesday afternoon. Google parent Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) shares were flat at about US$140.60.
