Minecraft has become the first single video game to rack up 300 million sales as it continues to solidify its position as the world’s bestseller.
Developer Mojang, which is a subsidiary of Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), unveiled over the weekend at its Minecraft Live event that the milestone had been hit.
It is a “milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks”, Mojang studio head Helen Chiang commented.
Though Tetris and the Super Mario franchise have collectively seen more copies sold, Minecraft is the only single game to have reached the mark, having been officially released in 2011.
Just over two years ago in April 2021, Mojang revealed that 238 million copies of its block-building game had been sold, suggesting sales have accelerated recently.
Mojang had been bought by Microsoft in 2014 for US$2.5 billion, marking one of the technology giant’s major gaming deals prior to its purchase of Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard, which received long-awaited approval in the UK last week.
Ahead of the game's 15th birthday next year, Mojang said it had "exciting plans" to celebrate the occasion, having already unveiled a host of updates this weekend.
Microsoft shares climbed 2.43% to US$335.70.
