Sean Smith of Eden Research talks innovation and market potential with Proactive

In a recent interview with Thomas Warner of Proactive, Sean Smith, the chief executive of Eden Research PLC (AIM:EDEN, OTCQB:EDNSF), delves into the company's latest developments.

Amid challenging market conditions, Eden Research has not only published promising interim results but also received its first commercial order for its innovative seed treatment, Ecovelex.

Thomas Warner: You recently released your interim results. Could you elaborate on Eden Research's performance?

Sean Smith: Absolutely. Despite facing challenging market conditions, particularly in southern Europe, which is our biggest market, we've seen year-over-year growth. We're optimistic about meeting market expectations by the year-end. Last year was good for us, and we expect to continue that trend.

TW: Within those interim results, there was information about Ecovelex. What can you tell us about this seed treatment?

SS: Ecovelex is a new product we've developed in partnership with Corteva Agriscience, the world's largest agriscience pure-play company. We've spent three years on its development, focusing on formulation, field efficacy, and regulatory documentation. We're now awaiting regulatory clearance, which is a process that could take 18 to 24 months.

TW: What led to the development of Ecovelex?

SS: The product was developed to fill a gap in the market. The current standard products are being removed due to toxicity concerns, creating a demand for safer, effective alternatives. Farmers in the UK and Italy have petitioned for emergency approval of Ecovelex.

TW: How are you managing the inventory risk associated with Ecovelex?

SS: We've produced a good quantity of Ecovelex in anticipation of regulatory clearance. To manage inventory risk, Corteva has agreed to take a certain amount from us this year and the next. If we receive emergency approvals, we have the product ready to go.

TW: Is this the largest production run for Ecovelex so far?

SS: Yes, it is. We're proud to be producing the product in the UK, working with a local contract manufacturing organisation. This ensures sustainable, reliable production using good manufacturing processes.

TW: You've recently raised £9.9 million. How do you plan to utilise these funds?

SS: The funds will primarily be used to support the commercialisation of Ecovelex. We aim to expand its range of available uses, thereby increasing our addressable market. We're also investing in our next product, an insecticide currently undergoing trials in more than 140 different locations worldwide.

TW: Could you elaborate on the insecticide you mentioned?

SS: While I can't divulge too many details, I can say that it's undergoing trials globally. We're excited about its potential and anticipate moving into the regulatory stage soon.

TW: What should Eden Research investors look forward to in the coming months?

SS: Investors can expect strong support for Ecovelex in the market, especially as we work with Corteva to expand its applications. Additionally, our new insecticide is something to watch out for as it moves closer to the regulatory stage.
