Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) has highlighted its two-day ‘Prime Big Deal Days’ event, which took place on 10 and 11 October, as the company’s largest yet, outpacing last year.
Over 25 million items were sold in the US on the first day alone, Amazon said in a statement.
Globally, customers saved upwards of US$1 billion, as the number of sales stretched to roughly 150 million over both days.
According to Amazon's worldwide stores boss, Doug Herrington, October’s event outpaced the inaugural Prime Big Deal Days event held last year.
“Prime Big Deal Days was a strong start to the holiday shopping season, offering Prime members an exclusive early opportunity to save and surpassing our expectations,” he said.
“This event outpaced last year’s holiday kick-off event, with more Prime members shopping this year.”
Amazon’s October event was an autumn follow-up to July’s main Prime Day, which saw a higher average spend per customer.
The event marks a wider bid by the likes of Amazon and rival retailers Walmart and Target to encourage holiday-season demand by holding further events where items are discounted, similar to Black Friday.
