Artificial intelligence (AI) programs such as ChatGPT have been temporarily banned on government computers used by US Space Force staff.
Citing “data aggregation risks”, America’s public space service has barred staff from using the likes of generative AI on their government computers since late September.
“[AI] will undoubtedly revolutionize our workforce and enhance [our] ability to operate at speed,” Space Force chief technology officer Lisa Costa said in a memo cited by Bloomberg.
However, a temporary ban was being placed on the use of AI technology until formal approval was given, the memo dated 29 September said.
According to Costa, more guidance on the use of AI among Space Force staff will be released in the coming weeks.
"A strategic pause on the use of Generative AI and Large Language Models within the U.S. Space Force has been implemented as we determine the best path forward to integrate these,” a spokesperson added.
The use of AI programmes has boomed this year, since the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022.
Though many organisations and companies have swiftly moved to adopt the technology, questions have been raised over the safety of such programmes, especially given the lack of regulation over AI.
