Ovo Energy has begun offering customers credit for 6,000 miles worth of charge for their electric vehicles in a partnership with Select Car Leasing.
According to Ovo, over 90% of petrol and diesel car owners say they would be more likely to purchase an electric vehicle if charging costs were lower.
As a result, the deal aims to entice those on the fence about switching to a petrol or diesel alternative with £200 worth of credit for energy to charge electric vehicles.
“Our free charging miles promotion with OVO makes leasing and charging an electric vehicle more affordable than ever,” Select Car Leasing co-chief executive Mark Tongue said.
As the price of energy has soared in recent years, charging costs have become one of a number of reasons deterring people from buying electric vehicles.
A survey by the AA had found some 70% of respondents had been “put off” buying electric cars last year in response to the hiked price of energy.
Despite this, alongside concerts over high vehicle prices, sales of electric vehicles have indeed climbed steadily this year, albeit not in line with petrol cars.
According to industry body The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, some 45,323 battery electric vehicles were registered in the UK in September, up 18% year on year.
Petrol car sales remained far higher though, at 105,463 for the month, having jumped by 15%.
“We need to accelerate the transition, encouraging all motorists to make the switch,” the industry group commented.
“This means adding carrots to the stick – creating private purchase incentives aligned with business benefits, equalising on-street charging VAT with off-street domestic rates and mandating charge point rollout in line with how electric vehicle sales are now.”
