Google unveils new medical application for its AI

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)'s Google Cloud has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled search tool aimed at streamlining the healthcare sector's data management.

The tool is designed to help clinicians efficiently retrieve accurate clinical information from disparate sources such as electronic health records, clinical notes, and scanned documents.

According to Lisa O'Malley, senior director of product management for cloud AI at Google Cloud, the technology will save healthcare workers considerable time and effort.

The search tool has applications beyond clinical data retrieval; it can also assist in accurate billing and identifying patients eligible for clinical trials. The technology cites and links to the original data source, mitigating concerns about data accuracy.

This innovation comes as a relief to an industry already grappling with staff shortages and administrative burdens.

A 2022 Medscape survey revealed that 53% of physicians reported feeling burned out, an increase from 42% in 2018, according to a report carried by CNBC.

The new search capabilities will be integrated into Google's Vertex AI Search platform, which is already used across various industries.

Early access to the healthcare-specific offering is available, and organisations such as the Mayo Clinic and Highmark Health are among the early testers. While the technology promises to be transformative, its adoption faces challenges such as workflow integration and building trust among healthcare workers.
